In this week’s book discussion (9:10) of chapter 24 of the book, “171 Answers” Mark and Anika discuss the common mistakes that students and parents make on college visits.
Mark lists what he regards as some of the most common mistakes that he sees students and parents make on college visits and Mark asks Anika for her feedback. Anika shares the mistakes that really stood out to her from Mark’s list. Mark did not list every mistake but he does share about 15 mistakes. Some of these mistakes are bad decisions that students and parents make and others are things students and/or parents omit to do that they should do. This week’s question (18:45) is from a student named Mahogany who is from New Hampshire and she wants to know if she can submit only one of her SAT subject test scores to the colleges on her list.
We broaden the conversation to include SAT and ACT scores and we ask can only one SAT or ACT score be submitted. We discuss the various policies that colleges have on this subject. (Length 7:25)
Part 3 of Mark’s interview with college expert Brandi Smith (26:10) Brandi Smith is the college advisor at Marietta High School in Marietta, Georgia.
Brandi discusses the reason counselors often have knowledge of some of the best scholarships students should apply for. Brandi shares additional resources that school counselors have that students should take advantage of. Brandi and Mark converse about the kind of actions that make a student stand out, positively or negatively in the eyes of the counselor and in the eyes of the colleges who recruit. Brandi let our listeners know how the School Counselor and Admissions Officers communicate with each other. Brandi closes with some pearls of wisdom. This is part three of a three part interview.
